| “The
purposes of this association shall be to promote the
well-being of the Black community of the University; to
assertively push for the recruitment of Black faculty,
administrators, staff, and students; to assist in the
recruitment and retention of Black undergraduate and graduate
students at George Mason; to encourage equitable utilization
of Black faculty, administrators, and staff throughout the
university community; to provide liaison between ABFAS and the
university administration; and to organize and maintain a
support network for Black faculty, administrators, staff, and

Who is eligible to join ABFAS and how can I become a member? |
| All
members of the university community who have a common interest
in promoting the well-being of the Black African Heritage
administrators, faculty, staff and students of the
university. |

Are there membership fees? |
| Yes –
voting members pay annual membership dues of each
academic year. There are no fees for associate
members. Voting members plan the association's agenda and
establish the organization's policies and procedures.
Associate members are welcome to attend the association's
monthly meetings and are encouraged to serve on one of the
organization's five committees or as an executive committee
officer. |

What activities does ABFAS participate in? |
| ABFAS
activities include: a networking reception, a service project
in support of a family needing assistance, standing committee
presentation and information exchange, professional
development speakers/workshops, discussion forums with
students, collaborations with a number of university
departments and organizations, and an end of year luncheon. |

What other campus organizations is ABFAS affiliated with? |
| ABFAS
members represent a variety of university departments and
organizations; our affiliations are manifested through these
relationships and participation in projects of common
interest. The Student Concerns Committee has responsibility
for the development and stewardship of our relationship with

| ABFAS
generally meet in the African American Studies Resource
Center: The Paul Robeson Room, Located in the Johnson Center,
Rm 240; Scheduled meetings are the first Wednesday of each
